Dr. Tabat M Islambouly  (1867 – 1941)

Dr. Tabat M Islambouly was born in Damascus, Syria, in 1867 to a Kurdish-Jewish family who originated from Western Kurdistan (Rojava).

Tabat studied at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in the United States of America and graduated with her medical degree in 1890.

Besides from her education and background, very little is known regarding Tabat's personal life, but it is believed that upon returning to Damascus she moved on to Cairo in 1919 where she remained until her death in 1941.

Tabat is noted as the earliest documented Kurdish female physician of our times, her early accomplishments both in science and breaking the gender norms within in her profession is nothing short of revolutionary.
